But...it doesn't get much simpler than those older Rangers, and there is something to be said for simple. I'd jump on one of I stumbled across one for sale at a reasonable price.
They are hard to find nowadays in decent shape. A few reasons:

Rust. Those old Rangers are pushing 25+ years and unless they were garage kept and the undercoating maintained they will have some serious rust issues. All of ours, and most I see in the wild, had huge holes in the wheel wells and that ridge under the doors.

Second (and probably biggest) reason being work crews buying them up and running them into the ground. Most of the time if I see an old ranger on the road its loaded to the brim with roofing material or landscaping waste.

Country boys also bought alot of them up, put lift kits on them to go mudding. At least down here in KY they did :).

There is a nice one in my neighborhood that I see all the time. I believe its an 92-ish XTL, sweet condition with that all red interior. Old timer drives it around, probably had it since new.

True. Though my hope would be per-event compensation for owners - current or previous - to cover each time the clutch packs needed replacing while under warranty. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't think we'd ever see that, but the difference is here is Ford knowing they were defective from day one and the fact that they've never been able to fix them.

So even if a person doesn't own the car anymore, there would hopefully be some sort of compensation for the hassle. Will it be anywhere near what would be just and fair? Of course not. Because even if it starts out that way, the majority will end up in the lawyers' pockets (as you said).

This was my first new car...ever. I had always bought used. From here on out, I'm back to that. I thought I'd try paying the premium that comes with new so we could have the car we actually wanted, rather than the best we could find at the time. Not worth it.

If I'm being honest, that's kind of my opinion even if the DPS6 hadn't been the dumpster fire that it is. My wife wanted this car and it was exciting to buy new, but we're not really that picky and so buying new doesn't make sense to us. The DPS6 fiasco just reinforces the idea. If you've got the time and patience, waiting for a good deal to come around on a car with as many of the options you want and a clean history makes way more sense.

The only real effective way to "own" a new car is to lease it. That way any problem is covered by the warranty or the dealer.

Well you don't own a lease you are basically renting it. If you can't sell it you don't own it.
If you are going to lease a car do it right, and lease a luxury car. Luxury brands typically subsidize their leases heavily.

You are correct it is practically a long term rent, it is also the recommended way to drive a new car without having to empty the wallet on electronic repairs and maintenance.

Used cars from the mid-2000s when it's electronically-minimalistic though...
