2012 Coolant Tank plastic cracked, bubbled??

Hey everyone,

Frequent forum reader but this is my first time actually generating an account to post, but I have a pretty weird question that I couldn't find an answer for elsewhere on here.

So, the other day I picked up my 2012 Focus SE from the shop (unrelated issue) and when I got home I took a quick look under the hood and when checking out my coolant expansion tank, I noticed what looks like a raised, plastic bubble sticking up in the middle of it, as seen in the attached photo.

Now, this 100% could be one of those things that has always been there but never noticed by me until now, but the thing that makes me question it is the fact that the day before I took it to the shop, I saw that the front-right clip/cap next to the overflow hose was a little wobbly and loose, so I used a little bit of silicone to adhere it to keep it in place until I order a replacement one.
I replaced this tank last year and I went to look at the part that I ordered online which is the same one as in the second attached photo.
and I can see on this that there is the same little button-like plastic piece in the center, but from this picture I can't tell if it is raised like the one on my tank.
Does anyone have any ideas about this? Is it normal, if not what can cause it?
I previously haven't had any other cooling system issues, my engine has not overheated and I'm not losing coolant-- so if this has been there for a while, I haven't run into any issues because of it. But if it's a new issue, I want to try to figure it out before anything goes wrong.
It almost seems like a plastic bubble that got pressed out the opposite way. Can the coolant getting too hot/the tank having too much pressure cause something like this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Jonathan7119,

That 'button' in the center is just a relic from the manufacturing process. It is like the bellybutton on us humans. Nothing to worry about other than aesthetics.

I don't have an explanation for the deterioration of the right-hand side plug. High pressure would cause high temperature but the overflow should relieve at some set pressure (not sure what it is, sorry). The operating pressure of the system when hot can't be much more than a few psi (example, 5 to 7 psig). I am sure that The Google will produce the correct answer to the question of "what is the tank pressure when hot?". (Actually, one of the forum members here may have posted the info - run a search and see what shows up.)

Other than the injection nub, I haven't given you much useful info about the plug wear and tear. Help will appear in more info-packed posts, lol.

Chris

Thanks for the response Chris! So you’re saying that in theory, even if this “button” were somewhat flat before, but is now raised, that it’s just because of the make of the tank?

Jonathan7119,

Yes, every tank will be a little different from the next.

I imagine that the connection point can be flat, convex, or concave depending on when the feed part is cut off from the tank. If the tank is soft and hanging from the feed point, we can expect the bump to be convex. If it is upside down (feed point on the bottom) then the button would concave.

If the button is softer than the surrounding tank then it's probably a little thin but I have not seen any post where the button has failed. So use that new tank with confidence, I say! :D
