Hi all,

For the last couple months now, my 14 SE 5 spd sedan has been acting rather strange at idle. It only happens sometimes, so it's hard to reproduce, unfortunately.

Sometimes, after buzzing around town getting errands done, the car will start to rev on its own. it does NOT do this while the car is in motion, (as far as I can tell anyway) but rather when I'm stopped and at idle. It'll rev up to around 1,600 RPM even when the engine is hot (doesn't seem to do it as MUCH when engine is cold, but still happens), and it'll stay there for a while, then suddenly drop down to about 600 RPM and it starts shaking the entire car back and forth and bounces RPMs down there. Give it a little gas, it goes back up to 1600 and stays there for a while, then the process repeats.

I'm off ALL pedals. I know the car raises the rpms just a hair when i have brakes off and clutch in, to help aid in a smooth start. It's not that.

The car starts, revs, and drives without ANY issue at all. All feels normal. I sometimes forget about the issue until I see that tach start climbing and my feet off all pedals.

Occasionally, on some start-ups, a check engine light will be there, but always when I have no time to stop and get it looked at. The next time I start the car, it may or it may NOT be there.

Anyone have any ideas on what I can look into? Additionally, are the videos enough evidence for Ford to make a decision or "diagnose" the car, or would I need to bring it by as it was doing the issue? It'll go a few days with no problems, and other days it's almost as soon as I start the car.

This sound like an intake problem. When is the last time you changed your engine air filter? Is the throttle body dirty?

Vacuum leak or the throttle sensor/gas pedal.

Might be able to pull up on a decent code reader the pedal position vs actual throttle position to figure out if the sensor is bad.
Think they would have a code for that though, which might be the code poping up.
worth getting the code read anyway to see if any are pending.

As others have said, it could be a vacuum leak. But, here's another thing it could be:

I had this issue happen once on an older car where the car would literally start accelerate on its own. The RPMs would climb as though someone were pushing the gas pedal. What it ended up being is the vacuum controlled fuel pressure regulator had worn out and gasoline had started making its way into the vacuum lines and then into the air intake.

Just another thing to check for.

Mine is doing the same and was told it is related to the canister purge valve recall.

Pickup Forscan (free) and a OBD II USB cable with speed switch. Can easily read TPS and such.

Wow, they won't let me post links since this is my first post. I just deleted them all, maybe if I'm allowed to link in the future I can be a useful contributor.

My car also has an intermittent issue with the idle droop. Most likely cause is the vapor canister purge valve. The number of views on my crap video makes me think this affects quite a few people:

I've had a high idle one time, after some laps around the local racetrack when it was 95F out. I haven't seen this happen since then. This makes me think that high temperature makes it more likely for the valve to stick.

In any case, like rednek17 mentioned, there is a recall for this part:

If you make an appointment with your local dealer they should be able to fix it for you for free.

When I looked for this part 2 years ago, before the recall, it was over $100 for a new one. Looks like the price has come down, in case you'd rather replace it yourself.

I just had the recall work done last friday and mine is still having this issue. I will be doing a full tune up in a month or so (about to hit 100K) so I will look into cleaning quite a few parts at the same time.
