Angry Transmission Defects from Factory

So after a series of events that lead me to postpone my purchase of the SEXY FOCUS, I called up Ford with a question on my expiring private cash offer. When I was about to hang up I asked the lady a question specifically related to the car I was planning to buy. She said that the Focus I was interested in had a faulty transmission that had been recalled. I searched these fourms and did not see anything that was releated to this. Appearently, according to a Ford Coustomer Servvice Rep, SOME 2012 Ford Foci that were built on 10/24-10/26 with Automatic Transmission with Select Shift tranny were faulty and needed to be replaced. So, as I was on the way to the dealer, with a check in hand, I get a call that says that he (my dealer) legally cannot sell me the car until it's service is complete and that is why I called in the first place. But now I am weary of buying this car. Any Thoughts? Any cars with this build date have this problem and gotten it fixed?

That is interesting! I know (as well as much of the posters) that there is a TSB out for Focuses built 8/12 and before. When I called Ford to have a dealer perform a TSB (car built 5/16 or 5/17), I was told to wait a while to see if the noise persists by the time of the first oil change.

I will let the others chime in!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. They caught the issue before you got the car and they're doing what they have to to fix it before you buy it. It's good customer service in my opinion. Better to inconvenience you now rather than have it sit in the shop for several days after you've already picked it up.

Yea. Just the thought that the guy who installs it probably only installs 2 a year whereas the guy at the factory probably installs 5 a day.

The transmission is most likely assembled by a robot in the factory, actually, not by hand. They use job sheets and have access to things like AllData for procedures like that. All it takes is reading the directions the right way and any competent mechanic will do so. You have nothing to worry about, and if something DOES happen as a result of faulty installation, remember it was the tech at the dealership, not Ford as a company, that screwed up.

Yes, October 24th-26th build dates may have been comprimised. As from the bulletin...

In some of the affected vehicles, the DPS6 automatic transmission clutch assembly was
improperly balanced. An improperly balanced clutch can result in a vehicle vibration felt
through the steering wheel and/or seat in Park, Neutral and First gear. This vibration
condition may be noticeable initially or could take some time to develop, and may result in
high customer dissatisfaction.

It says it involves removing the trans and replacing the clutch assembly....not the actual transmission. Warranty time pays 6.5 hrs which doesn't seem like its that hairy of a job at all.

Fiestas built from Oct 18th-27th may also be affected.

It's being fixed before you even get it - seems like a good thing to me!

Dear Aperson9923,

No need to be weary of purchasing your Focus. Though there has been some issues with some vehicle lineup, the Focus has had no transmission recalls.

On another note, its great your dealer is getting your Focus set up now, so you don't have to schedule an appointment and ask for an update.

Let me know if you're enjoying your new-car sent! PM your VIN (if you have the vehicle) contact information and dealer information.

Dear Feta,

This is true, better to have any issues dealt prior to the vehicle leaving the lot. We do strive to be proactive when an issue arises. Thanks for the great advice!
