Now, there CAN be different sales tax rates based on the item purchased as well in some places, so that adds to the problem.

But, Ford SHOULD be able to get the information and put it up on the web site so the taxes get added in.

One thing that Ford SHOULD get rid of is the "destination charges". If the destination fees are the same for the continental USA, why not just add those in to the price since EVERYONE will be paying it anyway? Variable fees based on county/state is one thing, but if there is a flat delivery charge, why not just include that in the price of the car?

As far as prices, the problem also comes in where you DO have certain extra complications that come from the state/county you are dealing with. How much paperwork goes into the registration, title, etc...? I can see these being extras that add to the price over a list price as well. In general though, all of these things should not be "hidden", and should be the same no matter what dealer you go to.
This is true. I didn't really consider state-specific laws/taxes. Which still shouldn't be a problem with local stores. But I guess with internet transactions it complicates things a bit. But like you said it should still be possible to auto-calculate that sort of stuff, considering most websites already auto-calculate shipping addresses via zip code etc.

It isn't just state specific stuff, it is also down to the county and possibly county levels where extra taxes and fees can show up. It's a real mess caused by politicians who feel that they deserve 8 aides that each get paid over $100,000 each.

Totally agree with this part of your comment! These are not optional costs, so they should be in the price. I can understand why they don't put in the taxes - that's the government's money, not the manufacturer's, and it varies by location..

Also, has anyone else noticed how much these "freight" charges have increased in the last few years? $1200-$1400 seems be pretty common now, just a few years ago $600-$800 was normal. Anybody know if this is a real cost increase or a different way of making some profit?

I kinda wish they'd get rid of the destination charge for domestics cars completely. If the gov't really wanted to stimulate the economy, I think it would help a bit by knocking $750-$1000 off the price of domestic cars, rather than channeling subsidiaries into the pockets of greedy/stupid execs that don't even deserve it.

Considering no ships are involved in bringing the cars over, why are we stuck paying around the same money as the destination charges for some imports? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I am aware that gasoline is getting more expensive, but relatively speaking it's much cheaper to transport cars by road/railroad than by ship. Do any of you have any idea how much gasoline a freight ship consumes?!?

Personally I was stoked when I first heard about the 2012 Focus's price. But of course when I hopped onto the configurator page and chose the trim I wanted, my price jumped up by nearly $1000 without even a choosing a single damn option. It's that sort of thing that really annoys me. And I agree... at the very least include it in the front page.

I don't know... there's obviously a few things that could be better here. I think we can all agree that we don't like misleading prices.

Black only, no Stone. Also Tuscany Red or Arctic White for the extra cost colors.

Sales Tax

That's true but in the US the taxes differ by state and/or county. Personally I too would like for everything sold in the US to include the taxes so the price+tax is upfront. It's amazing how the regulatory and other fees change month to month.

Many people are trying to get a law passed here in America that basically states the sticker price must be the FINAL price of something you're purchasing.

Cars are the worst when it comes to this. When you see a car with an advertised "MSRP" of $16,000, you'll find that the price jumps up to $19,000 (exaggeration, but you get my point) when you use the online configurator. It could be through misleading package requirements, or the typical hidden fees of tax, title, destination, "processing", etc. Either way they seriously need to stop with this false advertisement BS.

Hi all- first post! I am finally going to be able to test drive the Titanium hatch back today. (They haven't had them in stock in LA, Ca) Also trying to figure out the real difference between the Titanium and SEL. Is it mostly the My Ford Touch System and that's about it? I see some say the SEL has a more comfortable ride- why is that? Tire size? Thanks for any info!

Titanium also has Sony stereo w. Sirius, intelligent access with push-button start, sport suspension, different seats, different coloured trim and access to certain options like handling package w. 18" wheels. Ride would be related to sport suspension (both SEL and Titanium come std with 17" wheels).
