I figured it out, finally.

No foot on brake.

Car unlocked.

No seatbelt clicked.

Cycle from off to on without turning over, each time you reach on that is a count.
Total of 8, so on the 8th you stay in the on position. Car will chime and cycle locks

Then touch any button on the remotes you want to reprog, each remote touched will cycle the locks.

Turn key to off and get back about your business.

Can you do this without any working remotes? (I have two new ones and they one we had is probably gone forever - long story).

I did it without any working remotes.

Also, FYI, I tried the 8 cycles of the key method many times and failed. Then I saw a method that was a little different. After about 5 cycles, there is a chime that sounds. When that happens, then you hit a button on each of the remotes. My locks never cycled on and off as is supposed to be the case with the 8X method.

My Focus is a 2003 sedan.

I was also able to use Forscan to create 2 new keys from cut blanks with only one working key. For that you need a laptop and a corded/modified ELM scanner (about $20 on Amazon).

Yes but I've seen both methods posted for mk2's and my 2003 is a mk2.
