Larger Oil Filter?

I was wondering if anyone here was running a larger oil filter on their focus?

I use Mobil1 filters with Castrol Edge Extended at 10-15k intervals. I have an incredibly busy schedule, so I basically pick my least busy week after 10k to change. I end up with 12-or-so-k intervals. Well, my next oil change is coming up...

M1-102 is our recommended filter, however, an M1-209 has the same diameter (3.15") and thread. It seems the only difference is capacity, with the 205 being nearly 1.3 inches longer for a total displacement of 37.95in³ vs the 102's 28.21. More filter media should mean larger soil capacity with less resistance, and, a happier engine.

I'll be running a 209 on my upcoming change, why not?

UPDATE 3/5/17
Filter installed, pictures posted

I have considered a larger filter because I go >10K miles. But a larger filter is going to hang lower and potentially get dented or punctured by road debris.

I usually just change the filter at 5000 or 6000 miles.

Hope someone can justify this. It could be great for those hoped for longer interval between oil changes.

Some use a larger filter for the slight additional oil capacity, there are those who like the idea since the first Focus model & before.

Filter media surface area is typically about the same for all decent filters, just less room total in he case.

I wouldn't do it. The gain would be minimal for filtration surface area and the road debris and curb damage risk will increase a lot. I've seen the factory sized filters smashed from driving/parking to far over the curb.

I did a bit more digging, and the M1-209 is the longer 102 (NOT the 205), same exact specs including bypass PSI. I'll edited the original to fix that.

Another thing is, there are many filters that are the correct size but have a lot of media. Fram Ultra (not the orange cheapie), Bosch Distance + should both be up for the distance.

I just tend to use the cheaper Supertech branded Wix filters because they are <$2.50 a piece.

I can't imagine why but some people have had dealer complaints about using them under factory warranty.

The bypass valve is important. Thank you for the info.

Side view comparison, M209 vs M102

M209 installed

As you can see, the filter is nearly twice as long. Despite the length, the filter does NOT hang below the oil pan! So, if you were to drive over something large enough to puncture your filter, you will also be replacing your entire undercarriage (and probably your front bumper). Alternatively, you could just pay attention whilst driving ;)

The filter also holds a near half-quart. I'm not sure how much the stock filter holds, significantly less I'm sure.

Now to rack up some miles...
