Cargo dimensions are pretty similar on the new focus, 13.2 vs 13.8 ('16 vs '09.) That being said, the hatch without the shelf in place trumps both with 23.3cu ft, so i always vote hatch for more versatility

You can compare the other interior dimensions here:
2016 Ford Focus - Specs, Engine Data, Weights and Trailer Towing | New-cars.com
2009 Ford Focus - Specs

(and get a manual! easy peasy, especially since you said you mainly do HW driving)

I want a remote starter and those don't play well with manual transmissions. I rolled 258,000 today. I'm starting to consider running this car through one more winter.

Thanks for the input. :)

I'm not even in the 100,000 mile club yet.

For sure, make the car run as long as you can/feasible/safe to do so. Especially be great if you can get it through one more winter. Fewer winters your new car sees the better

I've been using Walmart or Meijer (Michigan Chain store) conventional oil, changing 4500 to 6000 miles. I've never had to add between changes.

Way better than my 2001 Saturn SL1 that needed a pint every 3000 miles after it hit 60,000.

I'm going to get an Escape S or Fusion S, both have the 2.5 non turbo engine, in the spring.

Ford ruined the Focus with the switch to the DCT tranny. Sad.

2006 SE ZX4 door sedan. 248,000. Still running good but needs a few things. I've put new struts, lower control arms, rear shocks on it. No longer my daily driver put too good a car to get rid of. Regular oil changes 5-20 Mobil 1 and Motorcraft filters. Never loses a drop between changes. Got new tranny pan and gasket, fuel filter, and front brakes sitting ready to put on it some time after it warms up outside. Oh yea and I installed nice Pioneer double din cd player, 4 Kicker door speakers, and Kicker 8" sub in back deck with a 150 watt mono amp feeding it.

My next oil change, will put my blue 05 ZX4 SE beauty at 250k. She’s only ever needed one major fix (transmission rebuilt), but that wasn’t the car’s fault. It was because a young and dumb person figured out that high reving the car, then shoving it into D from N to do a burnout..... is a very, very, VERY bad idea.
Might have been me....
but, I learned my lesson! Aside from that, she takes care of me on the daily. She became mine at 89k. Before that, she was my cousin’s from brand new. So she’s been in the family, and is going to stay with me until the car god’s come.
