Accelerator pedal is in a low position

A friend of mine has recently bought a MK2 and got a chance to drive it, but I noticed a different with mine and that is the gas pedal in my car (MK1) is in a lower position, if I press the pedal upward with my feet there is more than 1 inch of space, but in his car this was not happening.

My question is how can I tighten the gas pedal as much as it is possible? or could it be that the accelerator cable needs to be replaced?

also, the 2008-2011's are drive by wire whereas the 00-07's are cable. Im sure that changes the feel compared to yours
