Wink I'd like to call a "Come to Jesus" meeting.

Okay. As "master of ceremonies" of this impromptu gathering, I shall now call this meeting to order.

First order of business? I propose this question to my esteemed colleagues:

What recommendations/advice/insight might you offer for a brand-new owner of a pre-owned 2001 Ford Focus SE Sedan?

Question

Thank you, gentlemen. Forgive my ignorance, but I assume by "SPI", you're referring to "Split Port Induction"?

Since Google is my friend (lol), I've gleaned the following info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CVH_engine

My motor is a 24-valve DOHC, so, is it safe to assume that that's what makes it a Zetec?

Thanks to the link found on this very Focus Fanatic board:

...as long as mine has the original motor, it's apparently a Zetec.

Yes a VIN position 8 = 3 is a Zetec engine.
Also a VIN position 5-7 = P34 (SE sedan) will be a Zetec engine.

Visual
SPI:

Zetec:

As mentioned keep up on all routine maintenance using quality oil/filters, etc. Zetecs tend to suffer from ignition issues over time stemming from their 'old' style secondary ignition coil pack/plug wires. Misfires due to failing coil pack is common. Leaking thermostat housing is very common. Zetecs should have timing belt, etc, replaced at 120K miles. If you are in rust belt do thorough inspection of all brake lines. My 2002 Zetec 5-speed wagon has 135K and runs very well. I had a 2001 Escort ZX2 5-speed with Zetec engine that I bought new and drove 275K miles and had to scrap in 2015 due to severe underbody rust. Engine/trans/drivetrain still ran perfect.

Good luck
Paul

Thumbs up

Paul, thank you. This is precisely the kind of information I'm seeking. What to watch for, what to keep in mind, what's likely to fail when, and why, etcetera.

Something tells me a great many of the veterans here have amassed an incredible amount of knowledge and experience with this model. This will be my first Focus so, trust me, I'll be paying close attention to everyone here.

Speaking of veterans... on behalf of every single American civilian, please accept our gratitude and undying devotion for defending our country and our freedoms. We owe you our all.

Thank you.

I have an 03 with the Zetec and the engine is the best part of that car. Still going super strong. Main problem with the vehicle is rust, however, being in the rust-belt. I had to replace most of the rear brake lines and I used nicop so that should hold up well. One rocker panel was pretty much totally gone when I got it. One of the more recent things I did on it was the leaking thermostat housing. It is plastic and it looks like it got warped and the gasket wasn't enough to maintain a seal. I also just replaced the intake gaskets and a motor mount. It is pretty easy to work on.
