Keys don't open drivers door or hatch...

I got a new to me 2006 ZX5 in November of last year. I have never used the key in the door or the hatch until yesterday when I was testing a key I had made and it didn't work in the lock. I then tested the old key and it didn't work either. I then tried the hatch and it didn't work there. Is the only key I have the valet key or is there something else going on?

There is no valet key. Either all your door/hatch lock cylinders are seized (unlikely) or the ignition lock cylinder was replaced in the past and the key you were supplied is for that new cylinder only.

BTW I dont think you are unique by not using your door keys. Ive had my 2005 since 2014 and my 2002 since 2017 and I dont think Ive ever tried the door/hatch keys. Im going to try them now.

Is there a way to change the tumblers or do I have to change the whole lock cylinders?

I am fairly certain that once you have the lock cylinders out you can disassemble them and replace the tumblers to match your existing key. Separating the hatch lock cylinder from the latch without destroying the latch can be a bit challenging.

Don't get carried away yet. If the key starts the car then compare all to that working one and see if the cut is the same, if it is, the issue could simply be the spacing the cut has up or down the key length.

When spares valet or otherwise are made you can have a no-work key if the cut is off as little as .010" from where it needs to be, even if the actual cut is dead on matching the old one. Both my Nissan and Ford had the problem with new cut keys.

Meaning try opening the door and trunk again while carefully moving the key both deeper and shallower in the hole slight amounts. If it then works you need to figure out how to space the key cut to be in the proper place.

I have two keys that were given free when they didn't work and I simply respaced the cut to then work fine. Mine went too deep and I added a setplate to top of key made up of two quarters with holes drilled in each to take a small screw to set them in place, now the key can only go so deep. Funny looking key that always starts a conversation.

I've seen key cutters go through this, they cut based on your original which worked and then the new key won't work at all. The smarter ones will insist on going out to the car and testing them to see if they work or not, they then try to adjust to the length needed on the next key.

Next step...............a shot of WD40 into the keyslot, if they haven't been worked in a while they can seize up but come loose as soon as you do that and wobble the key around in the hole to spread lube. My Nissan pulled that one on the trunk lock, simply quit like it was the wrong key.

Naturally, all the keys to a vehicle need to have the same cut, if not somebody has wrong key or the lock cylinder has likely been changed.

The key that I presumed to be original to the car dosen't work to unlock any thing either. I'm not talking about the ones I had made I can't get any to work. It isn't a stuck lock they will not turn at all. I used dry lock lube and they still will not move. I think it is the locks themselves.

OR you haven't been here to see exactly what I have done child not sure why I bothered to ask. Thank you for being the ass and the reason I left this site years ago when I had the first ST IN '95.

Thank you but your concern is misplaced. And I already know I'm an -ss.

Uh, they didn't make Focus cars in '95...........and exactly the lack of attention to detail I was getting at with the 'box' remark. I can't be the reason anyway as I was not even on the web in '95. '12 here and it clearly says it on my join date, but one has to read to get that.

See what the english does to you? Like your post #6 basically being a simple retelling of post #1, nothing new there to help you at all. Locked in an endless circle there. Your own response in post #6 says you should change all the locks. Last sentence.

'It isn't a stuck lock they will not turn at all.'

Oh yeah try doing something with THAT. Now I need to research just what a stuck lock is, I've been apparently wrong all these years.

I gave you a couple of things to look at earlier and you jumped right over them in your redundant zeal. What good does help do if the helped then ignore it?

Oh yeah, you need fixin'.

Try WD40 in the keyslots like I SAID, it will often work when dry lube does nothing. Dry lube cannot migrate nearly so well as a wet lube does.

You still have not even mentioned whether the keys (any of them) go all the way into the locks, they have to before you have any chance of the lock turning.

Still no mention as well of whether the keys are all the same cut or not. Need to know as well if any of them are official Ford keys or all aftermarket. Need to know which one fits the ignition too.
