Question

I was looking into which car I should get as my first car, and I found the first gen Focus. I'm looking for a hatchback with a stick, so it seemed like it would be good for me, and I've always been a bit of a ford guy.

Can someone explain to me why people love these cars so much?
And if I were to get one, which one I should get? (Other than the SVT, I can't find any near me )

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I just don't know and am curious.

Thank you!

I fell in love with the car. The motor is shit when it comes to power unless you go turbo or supercharged. They run forever though.

If I could choose I would look for a 2003-2006 Focus with a Duratec , the Duratec engine gives you a lot more when it comes to making more performance later

Some 03 and 04 Focus Duratec came with a 2.3

05-07 zx5 manual with the sap bumper kit would be the best in terms of practicality and looks imo. You can easily find one of these for $2-3k. An SVT would be even better but good luck finding one in good shape and low miles under $5k

lol people love the duratecs more than the zetec ;)

Its just a newer and improved motor over the zetec (which was an improvement over the base SPI motor.) You can find nice examples of them for under $3k. I would find the newest/lowest mileage one in your price range. The auto is ok but the I prefer the 5sp manual. Ford put the motor in focus from 03-11, pretty much unchanged (aka pretty reliable.)

edit, i merged your two threads. You dont need to ask the same question in two places, one will suffice

I'm holding on to mine because it is light and sprightly compared to the bulk of cars in class since that aspire to handling mid-size family cars.
It offers a more visceral experience than the numb detachment so common in affordable cars. Also, it's a pretty cheap car to maintain. Parts are not pricey, extensive labor is usually not needed.
And it is not a "me too" car that is too ubiquitous like, say, a Civic or Corolla.
