The duratec has a crazy flat power band and the 5 speed is really smooth. The car is so light and nimble it's terribly fun to drive. The duratec was a popular cosworth engine and is used in a ton of homebrew kit cars so it's fairly tuneable with decent aftermarket support. Not to mention it never seems to run out of space in the back.

Also the looks will grow on you... Eventually...

If gas mileage is important to you, I found that my 2007 focus with the duratec engine gets about 2 to 3 mpg more than my first 2002 focus with the zetec engine. Have other experienced the same thing?
