Zx3 Hatch strut problem

So trying to find a fix for my rear hatch and the hatch struts that extend out to much. Car is a 2002 SVT. I got the car and the first winter with the it the hatch struts failed. No biggie they had motorcraft logos on them. Probably the originals. Picked up a set from Autozone and they seemed to be to long. So when I open my hatch the hatch makes contact with the roof line. Been living with it for a year.

Fast forward to today and I am in the junkyard raiding a couple things off a 2001 zx3. Anyways the hatch struts look new and open to the right length where the hatch is not touching the body. So I pull them off. I get home and swap them out on my car. Only to find the same issue as these hatch struts still open way to far and the hatch touches the roof.

I look over the hatch and find that the hinges are bottoming out on my car. I got to another svt focus I am fixing and its hatch only opens half way before stopping. They do not bottom out. Hinges look the same between the two cars. Just mine seem to open all the way vs the other cars seem to stop half way. Seem limited to the hatch strut length.

However this makes no sense to me. When I swapped a set from the 2001 which were stopping in the right location to my 2002 and they open to far. Is there a difference between the years on the struts for the zx3/zx5? Figure 00-07 would all be the same.

I would think the struts push until the hinge hits a hard stop...I find it hard to believe the hinges allow the hatch to impact the roof by design. I would concentrate on the hinges being defective in some way.

Nope, the strut length is what limits the hatch going up, not the hinge.

If I didn't believe you I would say it was unbelievable...that is a horrible design.

When I run your car through Tasca parts, I get part number 5S4Z-61406A10-A.

That part number covers 2000 to 2007 hatch models, including SVT.

If the strut works on one car on that series, but not yours, I would still say you need to look at the car.

I have a 2003 ZX3, non-SVT. I will check my hatch operation a little later if the rain here lets up.
