Going over towing capacity limit

Hi folks. Iv'e got a 2003 ZTW wagon with the Zetec engine and auto trans. I would like to know if anyone has gone over the 1000 pound limit for towing and if so, did you break anything?
Thanks, Wally

The main limitations here is the strength of the hitch and it's mounting points and your brakes. The engine and transmission can theoretically handle more especially if the car is empty and only one person. Where the danger comes is from the hitch breaking or ripping off the car with to much weight or from overpowering the brakes when trying to stop a large load. Trailers can be troublesome and dangerous things if the car isn't capable of handling the large load pushing the car along from behind.

What exactly are we talking about here? Is it a trip around the driveway or a long haul?
