Oil pan

In my adventure to changing out my oil pan I was told they no longer use a gasket on the oil pan, that they now use RTV Silicone?

Is this a good idea, does it work?

Yup rtv on the oil pan. Make sure you lay a good bead down and clean the surface

Black RTV. Let the RTV bead dry for a bit before bolting it back up than only finger tight n let it set up a bit more before cranking them down all the way.
I did this only a couple months ago and has held with no leaks.

I might add to use a plastic razor blade= don't nick the surface being alloy block & pan.

Ford never did make a Oil Pan Gasket it was always silicone

I have seen a lot of bearings knocked out because of to much silicone used in an engine , the silicone that gets pushed out because to much is added can be sucked thrugh the oil pump screen , through the oil pump and ends up in a bearing where it starves it of oil and bye bye bearing , crank , engine

You want just enough to seal the pan anything more and it can cause an engine failure

I heard by "gasket", it's actually just a little tube of RTV silicone that they sell you
