License Plate light stuck on

Hi everyone. Newbie to the site and first post. I bought my son a 2013 Focus SE sedan this weekend and brought it home late Saturday night. We noticed the license plate light was on. I tried everything to try and get it to turn off (locked/unlocked car, turned car off/on, turned headlights from auto to manual to off/on, opened trunk and closed numerous times, pulled fuses, etc) and have had no luck.

I've looked at the wiring harness under the trunk lid and am not seeing anything glaring.

I'm at a loss but am fearing an exposed wire somewhere that it touching positive to keep it on all the time, but am not too sure where to start looking.

Any ideas?

Guessing you didn't buy from a dealer or you'd just take it back there.

Start at the licence plate bulb sockets and work your way back. There really isn't an easy way to check otherwise. But an exposed wire should be fairly visible once you pull off panels and covers to see them.

On the older Foci, the umbilical where the wiring went through the rear deck lid was susceptible to frays and breaks. Not sure if newer ones have the same problem or not, but you'll come to that area in short order anyway.

No, didn't get it from a dealer, unfortunately. Well, I took it to my local Ford dealership and they diagnosed a faulty Body Control Module (BCM). $380 estimate. In everything I have found, this has to be done at a dealership due to the programming/reprogramming involved.

Somebody is going to feel really d-mn silly (about $380 worth) if the trunk harness has shorted the trunk light switch power lead (on all the time) to the license lights to be on all the time. BCM may even record that short as an error even though it can be easily fixed with no software update or BCM at all.
