Identifying the ID of my AC compressor

Hi folks,

I have been a lurker for many a year here which has been very enlightening, but usually I have found what I wanted from a little search. However now I am a bit stuck and wanted to hear if anyone has some suggestions:

Context: my AC compressor is shot. I will not personally fix this but I am looking to buy a replacement compressor and our mechanic will fit it in.

Car: 1999 model Ford Focus Estate 1.8 Turbo Diesel, bought in Germany used and currently running happily, if a bit warm inside, in Portugal.

Problem: I do not know the reference number of the compressor and when a car electrician dug in and had a look at it he found that the label that usually is on the compressor has been worn off. Without that reference number it seems to be difficult to buy a compressor off the internet.

Does anyone here have any suggestions as to how we can get hold of the reference number of this AC compressor? I am a bit stumped and my mechanic is too although he can get me a new compressor but then it would cost more than the car is worth so I am looking to either find something used or get a cheaper part from one of the main internet trading sites.

Any suggestions are very welcome!

Cheers,
Jarle.

Most responders here are US based and not going to really be able to help there as commonly things like a/c and alternators and such are commonly different in the Euro models as versus what we use here. We have no diesel models here as well.

Your only option is to have the compressor out where you can clearly see it to compare to the options in the a/c component sales catalogs.
