2012 Focus Handbrake no longer ratchets

Hey guys, I just came back from the store and my ebrake stopped working. Not sure if its not braking, but it does not ratchet. I figured i would post this really fast and then look at it more in a minute and post what I find.

I did some searching on google for a bit, but only found info about earlier gen focus with a weakening or stuck brake handle.

I took off the cover and the key that rests on the spoke is not engaging. I had to push it towards it and even then it did not want to engage. The button at that point did nothing and was just slightly springy. After a few tries it engaged. I tried to see if the spring came out so that I could add some more load to it, but I did not want to have it fall out and then I would be shit out of luck finding it. I will just leave the boot cover and shroud off for when it happens again. Then I can use a flat head to get it to engage. I wonder if this is a known issue?

Since I tightened the nut and removed the cover, it has not done it.
