02 ZX3 AC question

With the first warm day in NC, and the Focus sitting in the sun, I hit the AC button to cool things off. No green LED to confirm that the AC was on. I checked and the AC compressor was idle.

Just for giggles I put the control in the defrost mode and the AC compressor kicked on.

Where should I look first? The wiring diagram I have shows the AC control button going into a solid state module on the grouping called the "heater control module". Might it be the switch itself? If not that, is the solid state module a replaceable item?

Much appreciation for any advice to get me started.

Joe

Does the blower work on all speeds?
When you put it in defrost mode and the compressor came on did was the air from the defrost vent very cold (with temp set to cold)?

The AC switch is part of the Heater Control Module:

https://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-YH.../dp/B000C5E01I

Module was used 02-07 - you probably can find one in a JY for 10 bucks. Having said that Im not convinced its the module - yet. Other faults can cause the same symptoms - low refrigerant, bad pressure switch(s), wiring problems, etc.

Your question on whether the fan works at all speeds was the hint I needed. Tough to hear that the fan was not working on low speed. Running the fan with the engine off tipped me off to the fact that the fan is not working on low speed. From the wiring diagram, the control module gets its ground from the low speed terminal suggests that the low speed leg of the fan resistor module is open. When on the defrost setting, and at a higher speed fan setting, the air from the defrost vents is cold.

Now to excavate and replace the fan resistor.

Thanks, Paul1958 for asking exactly the right question!

You most likely need a blower resistor assembly which is not an expensive part but if you want to be 100 percent and are certain its the low speed resistor that is open you could place a small jumper wire (just packprobe with a metal paperclip) between the BLK/YEL and BLK/WHT wires at the resistor assembly connector and see if the AC works normally (other than the fact that the fan will operate on medium when on low.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

I replaced the blower motor resistor and the problem was fixed. Thanks for the suggestions.

In the process I discovered that the piece of duct on the passenger side under the glove box is missing. I searched the internet with no results. Other than a salvage yard, are there any other sources you would suggest I check out?

Thanks again!

I wonder why someone would have removed that? Is it the one to the RH dash register?

I think a salvage yard will be your best -and lowest cost- bet.

Good luck

Is this what you are looking for?:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-200...frcectupt=true

You should be able to get that in a salvage yard for $5.

Good luck
Paul
