'01 SE Zetec 5spd - 2nd and 3rd gear noise around 2000 rpm

Greetings! Our 2001 Focus 2.0 Zetec recently turned 212k miles. We bought it in January and it was supposed to be my son's car but he doesn't want to drive a stick. Too bad for him because I am having lots of fun with it!

I noticed recently that when accelerating in 2nd gear (sometimes 3rd) between 1800 to 2000 rpm there is a noise and it sounds like a rattling/grinding/rubbing sound. It goes away when above 2000 rpm. I don't think it's anything loose because it only happens in these gears. A friend thinks it might be synchro? Any idea what might be causing this problem? Thanks.

I'd get the front in the air, check for excessive CV joint slack, or any looseness in the wheels
