Nothing right away from that info., what RPM is it turning when this happens?

Still on high idle? Idled down to normal by then? Idling low? Never hit high idle at start up?

Some of that could help with guessing if the idle speed control is working, for one area to start with.

If you hold in the trip odo button while starting it'll get you to a test mode, just release the button after it starts. Then click through options with the button until you see RPM.

I wasn't intending it to be that tough a question though.

Most people can tell the difference between HIGH idle on a cold start, normal idle speed, and barely chugging - almost stalling.

OK now that I reread your question on your response n actually understand what you meant when I fire it up the idle starts high but once I try to put in reverse or drive it goes to a real low idle n the a chugging sound then it shuts off once that happens I put it back in park turn the key then it fires right back up on a normal calm idle n once again try to put from park to drive in a hurry I it goes n starts running once I come to a complete stop the engine is so so low n quiet idle that it just calmly shuts while it's in drive so I hope those are better explanation to your question good sir

Look at pure idle issues, that being TB dirty, bad PCV valve or hose in back on that one. IAC possibly too. Possible vacuum leak. All that can lower idle and/or make it erratic enough to let motor quit.

Not starter at all if you are getting the car started.

If fuel pump has never been changed on that one you will, they commonly go out and a recall was out on them at one time. Buy the entire module as the pump by itself will not work if it's never been changed before. You need the module with 2 steel rods in the top.

If the engine is idling and you turn the A/C on, what happens? Does the idle dip down or stall?

Some good added comments & questions there.

Questions so far point to trying to determine IF the IAC is doing it's job of controlling idle speed, something we need to confirm at least in part.

It NEEDS to make adjustments for the load put on the engine once you put the car in gear, or a stall is the only result to expect. It also adjusts for other things, like A/C load, power steering load at the limits, alternator load, etc.. So, with A/C working you should see compensation occur to keep idle fairly even as the compressor cuts in & out. Good test for proper operation without putting it in gear.

Other issues can prevent it operating right, or overpower it's effects. amc49 touched on some of those. You can also have an engine running so poorly that it can't handle the load, for a variety of reasons, something else to check for piece by piece OR head straight for depending on your symptoms reported.
