I just bought my first car for almost $3000 2 weeks ago

It's a 2002 Ford Focus and since I bought it my wheel has gotten tighter every time I try to turn or move. Today on my way home my car nearly died on me on the highway my battery light came on, my a/c wouldn't work so I assumed it was my van belt because when I purchased the car I was told it would probably need to be changed soon and I figured I had enough time. After I was finally able to drive home at 2 miles an hr I had my uncle look under the hood for the problem and he discovered the belt was intact but this tensioner pulley had broken off. So I'm wondering what could've caused this? Where and how do I get it fixed? Did I spend almost $3000 on a piece of junk?

Moved this to it's own thread in General Tech Chat, as it doesn't fit in a thread on the idler pulley for a duratec engine.

You've got either an SPI or a zetec from the model year, not enough info. to say for sure otherwise.

Plenty of warning that the belt wasn't turning the accessories properly (besides being told) as the power steering is powered by that as well.

Tell us more about what you have, you'll at LEAST need a serpentine belt & tensioner to fix it. Checking everything it turns for free movement is the next step, and if it has an idler pulley that should be replaced as well.

We don't charge by the word, tell us more.

Here's a link to a stickie from the top of this page on determining which engine you have (with pictures): http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/g...ocus-have.html

I don't think anyone is ready to say it's a poj, but be realistic, it's a 13 year old car with 133k miles and an unknown maintenance history. Get yourself a service manual and start going through every maintenance item called for, ie filters, fluids, yes the belt and tensioner pulley, battery and alternator, power cables and grounds, brake system, lubricate all hinges, etc etc. When you're done you'll have reliable transportation and you'll know a lot about your car.

I would agree—expect general maintenance at this point, including repairing some random things that fail. Probably just unlucky with the tensioner, a lot of people change them preventatively when doing belts.
