A/C not working? Look under your car.

I have just parked my car one morning when I hear this hissing sound coming from the engine area. I checked the engine, fuel line, brake line etc. Nothing. So I thought, maybe it was one of the front tires leaking air. I was already late for work so I said, I'll just check it on my break.

After 2 hours, I checked it again, and still, there was this hissing sound, a lot weaker than before, but I could still hear it. I started the car, and checked the A/C. No cold air is coming out. Revved it a little, waited 10 min. nothing. So, I knew I was leaking refrigerant.

I bought a can of r-134/este oil and tried to fill it up, but I kept on losing pressure. The compressor turned on and off every 3 seconds or so. I then started hearing this hissing sound. I traced it and it's one of them hoses leaking the green (dyed) refrigerant/ ester oil. I moved it so I could see it clearly, and it had a 1/2 inch cut caused by a suspension metal part it's resting on. (THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL IN MY OPINION).

It's the hose that connects the compressor and the drier unit (the small fire extinguisher-like a/c part). It's a black hose, about 1/2" in diameter, under your car near the front passenger tire. It's easier to see from under the engine bay.

I fixed it by cutting it completely, removing the damaged part, buying a barb from a hardware store, and reconnecting it with the barb (or splicer if that's what you call it) and tightening it with two clamps on each side. A $3.00 fix plus a recharge of R-134 ($20.00). I got cold A/C again.

Good job on the repair! Make sure the clamps are tight, but good thinking!
