Question Question about A/C ?

Ok,
When I turn the A/C on in my SVTF it makes a terrible rattling sound on the outside of the car, sounds like it is coming from some place in the engine bay...its loud enough to hear from a distance away. Also, when driving with the A/C on at times (most) that car feels like it is sort of "missing". At times this is pretty bad, and others it is barely noticeable or doesnt do it. Ive tried to search on here for anything related but I couldnt come across any. Does any one else experience this when the A/C is on or know what may be going on to cause this? Any ideas, help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Russell K.

If it is still under warranty just take it in. But it could be your compressor.

Moving to ”Ford Focus Technical Chat”...

The A/C does suck up some power, so that could very well be the "missing" you're feeling as it kicks on and off.
As far as the rattling....I'll 2nd the "take it in to the Dealer" comment.
Especially if you're still under warranty.

Assuming the sound and the "miss" are related- check your compressor mounting bolts. If the compressor is clunking around it would make a sound you can hear outside the car. From inside the car, the compressor's clunking against the block might create a sound and vibration that could be mistaken for a miss.

Ok, I will check some of the things you guys have mentioned. Also, when idling and the A/C is on the steering wheel just vibrates bad. As far as the missing...it feels like the car wants to "jerk" and it does it a few times..will stop...and also seems like it gets better if I give more gas to the car. Its not really happening when the A/C shuts on and off, most of the time is just shortly after I have the air on. When the A/C is off, this doesnt happen. The missing and the rattling sounds have to be realated as they only happen together only when the A/C is on also. I really would like to avoid going to the dealer..but if worse comes to worse that will be my choice. Are there any other SVTF's that do this?? I also will mention that I only use the A/C when Im not shifting or braking. I turn it off to take off after stopping and turn it back on when Ive reached the gear I need to be in. Thanks for the help and advice given so far!

Even with the A/C switch ON, The compressor will still cycle on and off to prevent internal freezing and could feel like a somewhat random miss or lack of power. Under full power the PCM will turn off the compressor. The effect is more noticeable on smaller displacement engines because the load is a greater percent of the engines available torque. My wife's 1.8l Celica is much more affected than my 2.3l Focus.

A/C

You don't mention if you've installed solid motor mounts such as those from VF Engineering. If so, the vibration from the compressor will really shake the car...some of which is audible. Those rubbery OEM mounts absorbed vibrations caused by many sources. More solid mounts transmit them to all points of the car. I'd read about this, but when I finally turned on the A/C I couldn't beleive how much vibration and noise was being transmitted.

Also, the A/C REALLY saps the power down low. There's not a lot to begin with and I'm now having to adapt by revving the engine higher when at a standing start.
