It's a bit hard to explain if you haven't seen one. It's like a time-speed-distance rally in that you have a certain amount of time to make it from one control to the next. The 'checkpoints' are almost always located in alleys. The organizers choose groups of alleys that are difficult to navigate and connect them by surface streets. The route instructions are often very hard to figure out (on purpose). The organization of the events usually borders on silly. Most of these rallies ended at bars and everyone had a great time drinking beer and sharing stories of the night's fun.

I haven't heard about anyone putting on one for these for several years. My guess is that the drug problem in most 'downtown' areas has (1) made the organizers worried about the danger to participants and (2) today's increased police presence would also make it hard to pull off this type of event.

As long as they tell you where to go for the ending....

"Puzzle" rallies with tricky directions are hard to make fun, need a way to get back on course 'cause if you loose most at an early instruction the participants are just frustrated.

Alley Rally could get real humorous as many circle around in a small area trying to find their way.
