ST as a high-mileage daily?

Focussed for 17 years now...I started with a new manual ZX3 in '02, got a used '04 ZX5 (for $550) later, then a used '07 hatch (for $600). I've treated them all like trucks, jamming all kinds of junk in them for transport, and they've been solid and dependable and dirt cheap. I've done the vast majority of repairs myself.

But now my business is buying me a new car and I'm seriously thinking about the ST. Never owned a turbo that wasn't also diesel, and never had anything that takes premium. But since I cover a lot of miles in a year, I'd like to have something fun...and having the cost tax-deductible makes the price a bit more manageable.

How reliable is the ST as a daily high-mileage driver, just in its stock state? I don't plan to mod it up and take it on the track. How comfortable are those funky Recaro seats for a 10-hour trip? Any thoughts appreciated.

I wouldn’t consider any car with a turbo as the best daily, however the ST seems to be a very reliable car overall. I think you’d have a blast with it & still get around 30 or so mpg highway.

Are you talking about the ST2/ST3 seats? Those high bolstered seats really lock you in & I think it would be awful for a 10hr trip, but unfortunately if you want the upgraded infotainment system then you’re stuck with them. The ST1 seats are very comfortable however obviously the dash isn’t as nice.

I'm going to be straight up with you I have a Fiesta ST very enjoyable car I love it to death. If you were truly interested in a Focus ST join a Focus ST dedicated site ask this same question, and you will get a ton of feedback. There's really not that many people on this site that have a Focus ST well if they do they don't discuss it much. If you leave it stock use premium fuel, and do maintenance very reliable.

How comfortable would you be in my 31"W x 33"L Wranglers? Those seats, like clothing, can be comfortable for someone who fits into them but not for someone who doesn't.

I've only sat in them briefly at a car show and on a few short test drives. Though they felt fine to me for those short times, I would want to actually spend 10 hours in them before counting on them being OK for that too. Maybe you could find one to rent through turo.com to test for yourself (assuming they don't turn you off immediately when just sitting in them) before making the commitment.

Another thing to consider is the extra care and effort required getting in and out of them. I'm still pretty agile for my age, but had an uncomfortable surprise dropping down too soon onto the side bolster rather than the middle of the bottom cushion. Ouch. Not a mistake I'd be likely to ever make again, but more lift is required to clear the taller bolster getting out, too. Depending on your physical shape and condition, something to consider.

"New" to you, or "new" from the factory?

The Focus is no longer listed in any trim level in the "Build & Price" tool at ford.com in the U.S. (I suspect that is true in Canada too, but did not test it.) Unless you can still find a new one in some dealer's inventory where you are you would have to find one used. Whole different situation, especially for a turbocharged car.

The ST is very reliable and fun as stated. As far as the seats which was mentioned. If you fit into them great if not going to be uncomfortable ride.

It may be very reliable if not abused, but a turbo multiplies the risk when buying a used one if the prior owner(s) has (have) not kept up with oil changes, etc., or had too much fun and drove it too hard.

Give the Civic Si a look. Fun car that's rated at 38 hwy.

^ agreed

When i had high bolster seats, bride and sparco. I did multiple long trips and didn't mind that much, but then again i was in my 20s. For me it was just the heat, i can sit in them for along time but the ass just gets too hot after awhile.

That, or the Civic Sport. Alex on Autos has pretty thorough review videos on both on YouTube. Unfortunately (IMO), both are now turbos, but both can still be had with manual transmissions.
