Don't miss that point about changing the timing belt, the engine IS interference bigtime and bends all the valves if belt jumps or breaks.

Depending on how old it is & no its not mileage related either...The car could be sitting for awhile & it'd still need to be replaced. If you have no idea= really best to swap it out or you'll be seeing your valves kissing your pistons=NO GOOD.

Do you know for certain how long the belt that is in the engine now has been there?

If not, even when you get an answer you won't know if that belt has gone past the recommended miles or years, so not changing it would be taking a big gamble, wouldn't it?

I don't have any experience with earlier Focuses and my 2014 has a chain rather than a belt (one of the reasons I bought it), but I vaguely recall something like 60,000 miles or 5 years for cars I've owned before (VWs, Honda/Acuras, Toyotas) that have had belts. Even if that improved by X2 since I last bought a car with a belt (1990), yours is way past that at 225,000 miles and 15 years. Thin ice -- I agree with felixthecat:

Do water pump and all hoses while doing timing belt.

Change serpentine belt, and idler pulleys.

Probably need motor mounts.

Whenever I have bought a car the first thing I would buy for it (and for myself) has been at least one repair manual, but usually three: the one from the factory, one from Haynes, and another from Chilton. You'll find answers to your questions there.

(It appears that Chilton is now owned by Haynes, so it's likely that both brands would now have the same information rather than having a slightly different perspective like they used to. Also, the OEM info available from Helm appears to be skimpy for 2004, but might answer your questions about recommended service intervals.)
