P0455 & P0457 Assistance

2004 SVTF
~180K miles

It's kind of an odd occurrence at times. Sometimes I just get a CEL (P0455), sometimes I just get "Check Fuel Cap" (P0457) and sometimes I get the "Check Fuel Cap" and a little later the CEL (P0457). The codes (or code) come on after a couple hundred miles after clearing the codes.

I checked the fuel cap and it looks and feels fine. I guess I could spend another $20 (+ or -) and put a new OEM cap on.

Several thousand miles ago, I got a P0455, but that was my fault. After putting a new timing belt on, I didn't hook up one of the vacuum lines on the valve / canister on the passenger side firewall area. I put the line on properly and didn't have a problem until recently. Everything looks tight and free of cracks in that area.

Any other ideas besides a smoke test?

TIA

Yea possibly throw a gas cap at it. No fuel/vapor smell under the car or hood? Vacuum lines look good & are connected? Of course you didn't overfill the tank? Next as you mentioned, smoke test.

Yeah, I'll go and get another cap, but from what I have read, 99% of the time, those CEL codes aren't the result of a faulty fuel cap.
No vapor smell under the hood or inside the cabin. I also haven't smelled any vapor near the fuel tank, even when I'm filling up.
Vacuum lines look okay, but I'll take another peek at them.
I've turned a little OCD when refilling. I stop when the pump clicks off.
If a new cap doesn't work, I'll try to find a shop that has a good smoke test mechanic.
The SVTF doesn't seem to run any worse or any change in the MPGs with the codes. Weird to me.

Thanks for the reply.

Edit: I just ordered a new Motorcraft OEM cap. I'll post results if anyone really cares.

I add a tad bit more fuel after it clicks off. I just manually hold the nozzle trigger for some reason.

Gotcha. I used to do that but in the DC Metro area, some of the pumps recirculate the excess fuel, so I just stopped at the click. I usually go 1/2 speed on the pump if it isn't cold, rainy or otherwise uncomfortable outside. Just old age and OCD.

A new gas cap didn't solve anything. I didn't think it would, but I gave it a shot. Back to square one.
