So, when I got to work a few days back, I could really smell antifreeze after getting out of the car but didn't have time to find a cause. I work second shift, so it was too dark to figure out the issue after work too. I didn't really have a choice and had to drive the car home, which; is around a 5-10 minute drive. On my what home, I was freaking out a bit because the oil temp was climbing quite a bit.

After some investigation the next day, I found that my coolant bypass hose had a small rupture and that I had lost a good amount of antifreeze.

So yes, it seems like an issue with the coolant system can cause this to happen.

Also, I apologize if you have already replaced the thermostat house, but; if you haven't, I highly recommend getting a thermostat housing of the similar year Escort. The housing is much higher quality than the one that comes on the SVT and the plug on the bottom is a metal plug with threading instead of the useless plug with an o-ring that is just pushed in. It's one of the best upgrades I have done to my SVT.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

Set to change the thermostat, thermostat housing, and both temperature sensors tomorrow afternoon. Also gonna check all my hoses. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Bump mine runs on the slightly above even side going to change out to a 180 thermostat soon. Along with about 80 other things. Why is maintenance so hard?

Oh most definitely. I meant prior owners lack of maintenance.
