SVT Header Heat Shield Clean Up

I'm looking to clean up the header shield. I was thinking just to wire wheel or hand sand surface rust and then go over with header high heat paint. Is this right way to go about this and has anyone ever refurbished theirs while still in the engine bay?

You really have to remove it to to a good job.

I like to grind off the mounting tabs. The header is stainless but a grade that still forms a oxidation / rust on the outside. And I have tried the exhaust high temp on several ocations and never had good luck. It did not matter if I spent hours in prep and using the multi stages and primer and such or just do the minimal.

Cut the tabs off, do a nice titanium header wrap and call it done. That's really the only way you can make it look good if your heat shield has rotted out.
