I recently picked up a new car to replace my aging Focus SVT. I bought the Focus new in 2002 and it has been my daily driver since. With 210k miles, I have rebuilt the suspension, changed the timing belt and other twice now. I was going to sell it, but when i dropped it off for inspection I found out the rear subframe/cross member is rusted. I am not sure if I should spend the $400 plus my time to replace then $100+ for alignment. The car is solid otherwise, but I wouldn’t expect to get my money out of it. I guess I will have to stew on it for a day.

Bummer.

You might be able to find a used rear cross member for less. I swapped an SVT into my 05 Focus. So look and newer years also. Not alot of differences I believe. Just make sure it has the rear sway bar brackets. All your control arms should swap right over.

finding used subframe is probably the best solution, should be the same from 02-07 (maybe even through '11?.) The later year versions (05+ iirc) would have the reinforced lca's (little tab welded over the endlink hole for strength.) Ford also sold them out of FRPP at one point but finding one of those would be tough

they list the part number if you want to search for one

Any rear sub frame 2000-2011 will work. The 2012+ will work also if you keep the 00-11 trailing arms and buy different away bar bushing thing that goes through the lca.

Wow, lots of good info here. This community still impresses.

I have replaced the rear suspension before, but never dropped the rear sub frame. Besides dropping the control arms, springs/shocks and associated hardware, what else can I expect to remove to facilitate such a swap?

There are a few components on the SVT crossmember you will need to remove and move over. These are not suspension related to my knowledge. To drop the crossmember make sure you have a helper. It will help alot. I did mine solo and did okay with a jack and jack stands.

Just the sway bar and brake lines and ebrake cable. Shocks.

Really best to replace the cradle as you'll get more out of it + it'll be back on the street so someone else can will find joy out of a svtf......

It's an easy swap. You can find a sub frame for $50 or so. Take an hour to swap, get an alignment. Good to go.
