Question Replace Good Looking Timing Belt w/ Unknown Mileage On It?

2003

Should the timing belt be changed on a 2003 SVT I bought with 156,000 miles on it, and have put 8k miles on, even though the belt looks very good?

I bought the car from a dealer that presumably got it on a trade in, and it came with no service records whatsoever.

I'm getting a little noise out of the idler pulley and planned on changing that soon.

I often drive the car the way it was made to be driven--in a spirited manner.

No Carfax report ran? Sometimes that report will provide some details on services. I was able to do that on my car that had minimal service records but was able to see it consistently went to the same shop. Called the shop up and asked them about more details.

The condition of the rubber on the outside doesn't necessarily reflect the integrity of the belt. There's a fabric material ( don't know what it is) inside the belt that holds it all together, if that is compromised you would never know until it's too late.
