oil everywhere

Haven't done much looking yet its too cold. There is a decent amount of oil all over the block and in random places. It is also on the underside of the hood which I have never seen and makes me think its not the head gasket. No CEL and it actually runs ok despite there is smoke coming out of the exhaust and lots of oil burning off of the engine. Does not look like there is any coolant mixed with the oil also. Its almost like it shot out of the dipstick or there is some kind of oil feed disconnected. The PCV is a custom setup with the CFM plate going into a catch can and that looks ok. Just throwing this out there if anyone has ideas before I start tearing things apart.

I looked again today. Yeah I think the valve cover gasket is shot even though I changed it two years ago, maybe not seated right? I'll check filter also. I did notice that in my catch can there is oil 'slush' the water in there froze probably blocking the flow. Hope that's all, I'd really like to try out my new snow tires.
