Control Arm date split

Boy will I be glad when this is done!

What is the difference in control arms before and after the date split? I managed to get one of each.

I just figured out the before April 2004 control arm is the cheaper one, with a bolt on ball joint and a grease fitting.

The after April 2004 control arm is the expensive one with a riveted on ball joint and no grease fitting.

My car has a Dec 2003 build.

Is that the only difference between the two? It bolted up to the subframe fine but is not on the car yet.

Sounds like a design change. They both do the same thing. The bolt on b/j makes it a little easier to swap out the b/j vs drilling out the rivets. But its easier & a tad bit more for the whole A-arm. Kinda funny you got on of each. Could be what they had left....

Realize that the After 2004 build date code means that its for the 2005 model year. This is when they changed to a larger ball joint.

The control Arm comes bolted in or riveted. I got MOOG problem solver brand control arm for my 04 SVT and one came bolted one came riveted.

Interesting, my Amazon ones both came with bolted on ball joints and grease fittings.

Did you get the CK or the RK Line? There are 3 authorized vendors that make the CK line. Motorcraft is one of the ones that are branded and sold also as a MOOG CK line control arm. I think one of the 3 does the bolt in, the other 2 di the rivet.

I was tempted to try to return riveted one back and try my hand at getting another one from Amazon (pep-boys was the seller). But decided I would cross that road another day. I dont need to make my work on this car more work than it already is.

I got RKs. I think that's all I saw around here, looks like I can only get them at Advance Auto. I like Moog as they always worked well on my EGTs plus for the EGTs they had the grease fitting and OEM did not.

My bf, who is doing the work, likes the riveted ball joint but that one is the later one. It fits fine on the crossmember. Do you think it will fit on the car itself? 2005 started in April 2004?

Best part is (HAH best) is that with all the back and forth I did that night when I ordered them I ended up with two lefts. There isn't a store around that has both sides in stock, so we each drove 15 miles in opposite directions to pick them up the other morning. Today we have to go to yet another store to get the correct one and I'm hoping they'll take the wrong one back.

The price difference was crazy too, the early one was $63 and the later one was $108! I asked the counter guy about it and he just shrugged it off and refused to look. If he had, he may have picked up the date split and I could have avoided this entire mess.

Ford went to a bigger ball joint for '05, hence the spindle is changed also.

When do you start finding the next year vehicles on the lot? It's usualy late summer early fall, but 13 years ago it was really getting bad where everyone was trying to get a leg up and that was release next year's models before either other company did. So production of the end of model or trim usualy ends in late spring or summer and get the tooling at the plants done and parts in and tested and then out to dealer lots.

Complete facelift splits were not that common years ago - think 64.5 Mustang, Escorts in 85.5 and 88.5

I see a lot of random date splits in trucks that are not necessarily year changes, just a minor production change but still important for buying parts!

A few years ago we started to see a new Ford model in March - crazy. I'm seeing 2018 pop up in the catalog now which is what you'd expect for this time of year.

If the 2005 Focus starts in April 2004, there is no SVT after April, correct?

I got the right part and luckily was able to return the wrong one to the other store. I would have hated to go back to the first one. Kid wanted to give me a merchandise credit and all I could say was "that won't work", really, I just bought it Thursday and I get a store credit? He decided he could give me cash so I just held my breath and bolted out the door once it was in my hand.
