Oil Cooler

Source for an aftermarket oil cooler? We're doing belts and just discovered the cooler is shot.

None on the locator.

Can this be bypassed for a street car?

Have you looked at what the oil cooler is on the SVT? Its a small adapter puck that just circulates a bit more coolant around the oil filter.

How can you tell your current cooler is shot? Leaking?

Yes, I know what it is. Is it completely necessary on a street driven car? I'm wiling to bypass it if it won't cause undo strain on the engine. We'd added them to the race Escorts in the past, but those never came with coolers originally.

It was wet, and now that it's been touched it leaks pretty bad. From what I see online it's pretty common in salt areas (lucky me).

I work for a dealer, they have been gone for years. Closest thing I see is an Escape cooler but we don't have one in stock for me to compare side by side. The hoses would have to be changed too.

I also found a kit somewhere that was over $200 and I'd rather not go that route if I don't have to. In my quick look, I'm not sure that's a direct fit either.

Seriously, no one here has run into this? I've seen it on other forums but this is the only one I belong to to ask.

I think most are able to just take it off, wire wheel it and paint it up and then install it back on. Its likely just gunk and deposits on the hose connections. Use a good paint and put it back on. Or just get regular Zetec cooler lines and don't run coolant to it.

It should not hurt anything if you don't run coolant to it.

Will it hurt for a daily? likely not, but the SVT does have oil squirters so may pick up more heat than a normal Zetec also since they are putting more oil to the underside of the piston.

One of the tubes is crushed so a wire wheel would destroy the rest of it lol

I have finally found threads of people eliminating it. Just not yet clear which adapter they put back into the block - all the threads with pix are so old the pix are gone. I'm sure it will make sense once it's all apart. :) We were doing belts and clutch - sheesh. Gotta love the salt belt
