Sorry to say, but I'm guessing that the motor was over-revved and gave up. Get the compression checked out, as Magus suggested.

How fast were you going?

When you try and start the car, does it sound different than normal? Does it sound as if you're only hearing the starter spin?

Well this is based off assumptions but he said free way. Here in Tooele / Salt Lake area there are three speed limits, 70. 75, and further west and south is 80.

Most people go about 80 to 85 on the 75 section. (guessing where he broke down) so assuming worst case 3rd gear at 85 MPH would be below 7000 RPMs and fuel cut off is 7250 RPM which would put it at around 90ish MPH.

So unless he was going WAY faster than the posted speed limit 3rd gear should be fine.

Guess Is there damage to be done to the engine going from 3,500 RPM to 7000 RPM? I drop from 4th to 2d or 5th to 3rd often. Granted not when doing the full speed but I go from 2k rpm to 5.5k RPM often so a 3.5k RPM change should not do anything to the motor. Syncros in the trans, yes but motor should take it right?

When the crank is reverse driven by the transmission, instead of combustion, the fuel cutoff doesn't help save the motor if he crested redline.

Well looked and the car and I told it you better run or I will scrap you! And it started right up....

Haha no, checked fuel pressure via Xcal2, soil 38 psi at key in the on position.

Checked the spark plugs and other than being E3 plugs everything looked right and from the opening of the spark plug holes top of pistons were clean.

Checked timing and timing is on. Intake might be off by 1 or 2 degrees but I did not check the VCT to make sure it was in the 0 position. But with a TDC pin the exhaust was dead on so figures no jumping of teeth was made.

Noticed the coil pack wire was disconnected. Put it all back and made sure it was fully seated. And started up. He is missing the wire clip on the connector so suspected that the wire just rocked it self out of the connector when the harsh transition was made. Idles well and told. Him to get some stuff from the junk yard to put the car in better condition.
