Coolant levels good and the water pump provides was replaced with the timing belt less than 10k miles ago.

I need to actually do a data log on it. I have been lazy the last two days.

Could be a bad resivoir cap? Just throwing that out there.

My guess is it's the fan resistor and/or the pigtail.

Alright. Got it to data log and idle. I loaded a profile from my ZX3 but lost a few but was able to log and look at battery voltage, coolant temp, high spd fan on, low spd fan on.

about 1000 seconds (16.5 min) when engine temps hit 208 the low temp spd fan control turned on, but the fans did not turn on.

I let it go for a bit longer as temps increased to the max comfortable temp i wanted to take the engine. I then turned on the Max AC and the fans went on high speed. Once it went on high speed the coolant temps immediately went down along with the oil temp.

the slow speed indicator turned off and the high speed indicator turned on. When the fans turned off the high speed indicator turned off and the low speed turned on but the fans stopped turning.

After the cool down I removed the resistor and you guess it...

Broken. Digital multi meter read open. so am guessing this is the problem for this.

I noticed a few things also while looking at this:

1. When the fans where trying to turn on high speed there was voltage drops down to about 12VDC and took a few "kicks". I am guessing this was due to it being at idle, turning on AC clutch and going from no speed to high speed vs the traditional no speed to low speed to high speed.

2. I think I have a weird ECU

This is an early off the line focus so could it have been this way off the factory floor or has the P.O.(s) replaced the ECU?

3. My fuses look a like I should have some more...

I am missing R9 and R10. These are indicated as high and low speed relays for the 2.0L...

Also I think its R14 which is a HID lights for SVT but its not populated.

So in the end, should just be able to get a new resistor bank? I have never had this go out on my other ZX3 so this is a new one to me after 16 years of Foci ownership.

and the "high" speed only turns on with AC? There is no upper temp threshold that the high speed turn on even if you get to a really high temp?

I would think low speed from 210 and then high speed if you get to 230 or something. want to make sure that the high speed is only on when AC or MAX AC is used and its only low speed when the AC is off regardless of temperature being read.

Thanks!!

Theres clearly a break in your resistor, as a doagnostic test to see if that's all you need, you could sand the rust off at the break and either solder it back together or use a thick piece of wire to jumper it. Soldering it should be pretty safe if you want to leave it but I would not leave it with wire as the wire could burn up from the high amperage depending on the gauge.

The thing is so rusted and corroded that I don't think I would want to plug it back in. I am getting the Dorman OEM replacement one and should have it in a few days.

HA! Told ya!

Also charge your A/C. I charged 4 of my MK1's now they don't get that RPM drop when A/C compressor kicks on.

I will have it looked at. Have a buddy that has his own AC reclamation setup but he is a 1.5 hour drive. But dirt cheap in that it's only the cost of R-134A he has to add makes it worth it.

The AC has had a bunch of work done on this foci. Looking at the PO's service receipts and what came through on carfax and calling shops everything on the car has been replaced and the system has been recharged a few times. I have been thinking of pulling the AC out of my other Foci for prep for track use and then I would have a full spare system!

Thanks for the help.

Any thoughts on the ECU?

I bought that recharge kit. Used the can that came with it to determine that there was indeed a leak on the new 2002 Foci.

Now that I have the gauge I bought just the cans and refilled 3 other cars lol. Still have the wagon and the silver ZTS to do. Takes like 5 minutes.
