SVT HID Headlamp Repair

I was talking with another member here about buying his SVT HIDs. I'm new to the headlight game, though, outside of Ebay. Before I'd never really considered SVT HIDs, because ordinarily they cost PLENTY more than I'm willing to spend.

Anyways, long story short, I've got a few questions...

First a quick question about HID lighting. Are all SVT lights HID? Then, some general hardware questions. These lights are used. Most of the plastic clips are broken. As far as I know, the headlights ar eheld in place by three screws. I'm not sure (have yet to ask this) but I really doubt he's talking about the 3 holes for the screws that hold the actual housing in. He said that broken plastic clips are common, and I don't see a lot of people with SVT lights dangling from their car... Is it important to have the palstic clips? If they are not the 3 screws that hold the lights in place, what do they do for the light? My last question is about the lights themselves. Another reason the lights are much cheaper than your average Mach/SVT HIDs is because they have one missing bulb and need one new igniter. A bulb install, I'd imagine I could take care of, no problem. The igniter, though, could be some work. Is it easy to install a new igniter and bulb on the SVT headlights?

Thanks for the help, really looking forward to getting rid of my stock lights, but I'm having a damned hard time finding anything that really clicks as a good deal, and good headlights...

Not all SVT headlights are HID...only the EAP SVTFs had the HID lights, in addition to the Mach Audio ZTS. There are normal headlights that came on SVTs without the EAP,they're black where the normal ones are chrome/gray.

What you're thinking of when you say "igniter" is "ballast." Ballasts are relatively cheap in the world of HID, however, I'm not sure if you could just take any ballast and splice it into the system, you might need the OE Hella/Ford part to replace it and that could be expensive, especially since you'd almost have to go to the dealer for a replacement. Generally ballasts are cheap (~$40) but if you're getting it from the dealer I'm sure it'll be more.

As far as bulbs...if its the xenon bulb that's missing you're going to be looking at $75 (ballpark) for a replacement, assuming you can find a place that will sell you a single 4300K D2S bulb. You'd probably be better off getting a new set of bulbs and replace both at the same time, plus that way you could get a different color bulb (I'm partial to 5000K bulbs myself...they're whiter/brighter than the OEM 4300K bulbs that come with the SVT HIDs) if you so desire. Otherwise there's three other bulbs in the headlight; a normal halogen highbeam, a turn signal lamp and a sidemarker lamp. If any of those are missing you're looking at $5-20 for a replacement, however if you're getting the lights for a deal I'd imagine its the xenon bulb that's burned out since they're so expensive.

Define what he means by "most" of the tabs being broken off? I'd be hesitant if its missing more than one on each lamp, which I would assume they are. If all three are broken off of either I probably wouldn't buy them...while they aren't going to fly out of the car if not bolted in, at the same time the light is going to bounce all over the place if the lamp isn't secure.

I am sorry, but this information is incorrect. HID's came on the Mach Audio, SVT w/ European Appearance Package, and as an option on 03/04 non EAP SVT's.

So, are the ballasts real easy to swap out? I don't have much car modding experience, but I installed my radio and new mirrors with no problems, including wiring my mirror turn signals into my side markers. I also installed a cabin air filter (hardcore, eh?). Those are very light mods, but should give some idea of what level I'm at...

With the deal I'd be getting, I could deal with replacing a few bulbs, even if it was with dealership costs... I asked the seller whether the lights were HID or not. Honestly, as cool as HID would be, I could live without it. He does refer to them as SVT/Mach HIDs, though. I also confirmed that the only defects were a broken ballast/igniter and burned out light, in addition to the tabs. I asked for pictures to confirm that they're still in good shape, and a count on which tabs were broken. I also asked him to double check that the wiring and lenses are in good condition.

I'm pretty sure, also, that these are not the SVT lights that are just black versions of the stock ones. I got that image from ford's site, and as I recall, those were the same that he had. I'm gonna double check that too... Just to clarify, though. Are those ones always HID?

Are there any things to watch out for, with the SVT lights in particular? As far as I know, they are pretty nice, even light throw wise. I'm going to ask him to insure the package, for sure. And also, nothing personal to the seller, but this is the internet, bad things to happen... Is there any way (with paypal) that I could make this transaction safer for me, incase he ends up a Wenzel?

Thanks again for the help, I'm so damned excited to get these!

The lamps you posted are the HID lamps.

Not too sure on the tabs being broken, but I'd rather have ALL of them intact because the HID's are MUCH brighter than the halogens and need to be aimed perfectly or you WILL get flashed by oncomming traffic. The broken tabs won't keep the lamp from bouncing.

Very good point... Think if I made 2 really tight it would work? Is there any alternative solutions, or workarounds for broken tabs? I will not be doing anything with my stock headlamps, I'm not sure how it's all connected together, but would it be possible to salvage some clips and attach em? I'm pretty open to most jerry rigging, as long as it doesn't show on the outside...

He is saying that only the EAP SVTF and Mach had the HID's, which is incorrect. They were an available option on some non EAP 2003/2004 SVTF's.
