Ticking Noise In Cabin - Evap Purge?

I know these engines are noisy with direct inject, but Tom and I are working on the tune and noticing a lean at idle. I did some research and found a thread somewhere on Focus ST forum where people were complaining about a ticking they could hear from inside the car. They say it's intermittent, and I'm noticing the same thing on my 2016. When I datalog and hear this noise, the short term fuel trim goes lean and RPM increases. I also seem to feel more vibration. The car quiets down and trims go back to normal when the noise quiets/stops.

Can anyone with this engine turn theirs on and listen to it as it idles? Do you hear the same noise? I know the fuel pump makes noise too. Apparently it's the same issue from the recall about the evap purge. I haven't noticed the other symptoms like problems starting after fueling but maybe mine is just now dying.

We replaced the 02 sensor but I'm seeing the same, if not worse numbers. Saw almost 40% lean at times. I'm not the most mechanically inclined but if I just solved this, I'm gonna shit bricks. Lmao.

Same thing was happening to me, not the running lean part, but the ticking noise. Replaced the BV6Z-9D289-R Vapor Canister Purge Solenoid from Amazon for $46.00 and about 10 Minutes of my time. Ticking went away, no increase/decrease in gas mileage or any "performance" difference. I'm not a mechanic so don't take my word on it, but that's what worked for me.

Interesting that you didn't have performance issues. Whenever it ticks I can feel more vibration, the RPM on my datalog goes up, and fuel trims show a lean condition. I'll leave the link to one of the other threads I found. People have noted a rough idle, same as I'm seeing.

I'm thinking this has to be it. Just makes too much sense at this point. But it's obviously not failed enough to where it's throwing a CEL or maybe even deforming the fuel tank.

This was indeed the problem. The noise stopped, the excessive lean stopped, and the inconsistent RPM is gone too.

I would advise others to watch out for this problem in the future.

I’ve been experiencing this same problem. It sounds like a bad exhaust leak but I know that’s not it. I actually had the recall done but I’m thinking the dealer just did the pcm update and swapped the fuel tank but possibly never swapped this part (or it slowly failed). I finally got around to seeing what was or wasn’t (who knows at this point) placed in my car during the recall. I thought Bosch units were being used to update the previous units but this tag doesn’t match the part number that I ordered. This is what I have installed:

Huh. Your receipt or whatever from the dealer should show if they replaced your purge valve. In my case, it wasn't throwing codes, so they just did the PCM update. Either way, I verified with my VIN at a couple of dealer sites that the part I need is BV6Z-9D289-R.
