New owner, modding questions!

2018 Focus SEL hatchback.

Mods so far

- Green filter/open air box.

Goal is to sound good, look good, and not to void the warranty.

I have no muffler right now, and while it sounds great the negatives outweigh the positives.

Looking for a good sound. WRX, SRT-4, 370Z like, etc.

I know those are F/I or v6s', so I'm prepared to have to compromise, but still would like to get the best sound that I can.

Also:

- This is my first 4 cyl. What the hell is a "resonator" and how does that effect sound.

- Dumping it a bad idea?

- I'm trying to do the snorkel delete. I can't get the clips holding the snorkel out [facepalm]. Brute force is not working... any tips?

- Any other mods I can do that will increase performance without there being a good chance it voids the warranty?

Finally:

There is a small grindy noise from the front right side while under acceleration from 2k-2.5k RPMs while I accelerate slowly. Doesn't do it if I power through to 3k. Any ideas? Ford dealership acknowledged it, and said bring it back if it gets worse lol.

But another reason I don't want any mods that could void the warranty.

Thanks guys [headbang]

Put a proper fswerks Cat Back exhaust on it. Vehicles have resonators in the exhaust system to help eliminate drone caused by certain frequencies. It's never going to sound like a WRX because that sound comes from unequal header length. The Nissan 370 gets it's sound from being a V6 but most of it has to do with the valve timing. Exhaust systems are actually quite complicated if you want to get into the craziness of eliminating certain frequencies that cause certain unwanted noises. I have put fswerks Cat-Back exhaust on three different vehicles and have been happy with them.

Ohh, that's why a WRX sounds the way it does.

FSWerk is one of the exhaust I've been considering. What's the advantage of cat back piping opposed to just putting in a fswerk muffler and dumping it?

And thanks for explaining resonators. That's my main complaint with going without the muffler, the drone at highway speeds.

The advantage of a Cat-Back system is at least a quality one is even the metal that is chosen to make the pipe with can affect the sound. fswerks makes a few different exhaust systems for the focus based on the year and model some have a resonator and some don't. The one of my Fiesta ST does not have a resonator and it actually doesn't have any drone. On my 2010 Ford Focus however I chose the race exhaust option and it does have some drone versus the stealth edition for the same car has a resonator in the front no drone. It kills me when I see a Ford Focus of my generation with a fart can on the back because the muffler is actually in the center of the car the thing at the very back is a resonator. My 2010 Ford Focus from the factory has a resonator at front a muffler in the center and another resonator at the back. Fswerks sources there mufflers through magnaflow I believe but I think they are great quality for the price and you will be happy if you choose one. Now maybe I sound snobby but I also think a properly designed Cat-Back exhaust system just simply is nicer to have on the car then a factory cut up pipe with muffler thrown in it.

http://c-f-m.com....A good quality flex back system is the way to go if your going to do any exhaust mods. A header & a tune would make a difference also.

I have the TSUDO 3" ST Race Cat-back kit and it's awesome. You will need to up grade the TB to the larger 63MM one if I'm correct. This will give you your low end torque back and change it for the better.

ANYTHING you change could cause your warranty to be voided even a cold air intake

I would do a Full Custom Tune , if you get it from me you get free unlimited lifetime tune updates , one of the best mods you can add

Leave that car stock. Save your money for something more beneficial. You can't improve on the engine performance, The car is equipped with a very sophisticated ECM.
The only thing you will accomplish by putting stuff on your car is (make the corporations RICH)
You could install different struts and springs and tires, that would show immediate and noticeable improvement.

The ECM/PCM is totally tuneable , A Custom Tune helps performance and I offer 2 Turbo kits that raise the performance of the engine so there is a LOT of improvements you can do for the performance on the MK3
