The open-ended filters are just to increase intake noise as far as I can tell/understand...you will suck in warmer air with this vs. just leaving the stock air box as-is which is a true CAI. Removing the top of the box is again...a noise thing.

did the snorkel delete prior to getting the K&N. got the inlet today. so, if I understand correctly, put the top of the box back on, put the inlet on, and ride out the drop-in filter until I feel like ponying up for a CAI?

Or dont get a CAI and get a tune. you are only going to gain a couple HP from the CAI over the drop in with snorkel delete which in my opinion it's not really worth the extra cost. unless you are interested in it for the looks too.

excuse my ignorance, but please clarify "tune" and what type of shop would do this.

should answer all your questions. I actually just ordered mine a couple days ago and should get it tomorrow so i can start the tuning process. i chose to use the SCT tuner through Focus Power.

it does and it doesn't. gave me more questions. I know jack about tuning and where that investment lies on the list of priorities for this car. personally, I would think that exhaust comes before something like this, but I could be mistaken.

For me, i wanted to make sure that my car was getting all the power it could the way it is now. i wanted to improve the shifting of the dct and try to get some better MPG's too and i wanted to make sure everything is safe. that's why i went with a custom tune from Focus power using the SCT, he also does free tune updates for life on bolt on mods. so if you got it tuned now and then did the exhaust later, he would update the tune for free to take advantage of the exhaust.

it's personal preference really. i just chose to go with tune first.

The tune will "optimize" your engine based on how it actually performs vs. an un-optimized software programming that will work with every engine... it's totally safe and you can take advantage of higher octane fuel better than the stock tune can... one of those tuners (SCT) is fully custom will re-tune you for free after you do further mods too, like if you add an exhaust later. He takes the data you collect on your laptop with the device they send and he custom tunes your car based on what is free HP that can be gained safely and can raise the redline, I think a lot of people go with 7000 to 7200... he will also reprogram your DCT for better shifting, if you have that... One of the tunes(Injected) is a "canned" performance tune so it's up to you who you decide you like more based on each thread, but it's REALLY worth it.

yes, but remember a tune will void any warranty from Ford.
True you can remove the tune, however various sources say that in a big warranty issue, Ford WiLL look into if you had a tune, and yes they can tell you did. And yes they will refuse to cover the engine replacement due to you having had a 'tune' installed.
Naturally this has been discussed to death. and I am just mentioning it so anyone worried about it can do some research on it.
