Engine swap does it matter what year/model

I have a 2009 fusion with a dead 2.3 in it- low oil and previous owner spun a bearing. The oil looks like it contains 30% glitter by volume.

Planned on buying a donor car (Its a long wait for one it seems) to get everything from but in order to do that I need to know if its at all possible to use the more modern 2.5L from say a 2013-2016 Fusion or a 2.3L from a Mustang, are there other models more suitable? 2010-2012 Fusion I am aware of but they are less common to come across that don't have a V6 in them.

What about buying a wrecked mazda with that same duratec 25 engine in it? I've read there are differences between the Mazda engine and Ford engine but its usually a Mazda owner buying a Ford because they are less $$$.
