Common issue?

I just grabbed an 06 focus zxw for $300. A friend if mine got a new car after this was giving her problems. When test driving it, I gave it some gas to accelerate. It goes up in rpm but doesn't move any quicker. My instant thought was slipping transmission but no stuter no nothing just higher rpms and barely picks up. Has anyone had this issue with theirs before? If so what was the fix? I don't mind swapping a transmission in but I'd like to see if anyone has any suggestions as well. Going to be bringing it home and testing everything fuel pressure, vaccum, etc etc.
