02 zx3 spindle upgrade

I've gathered enough info that the swap is pretty straight forward to the 05 spindles, however part numbers for control arms/ball joints vary. Would I need to swap control arms to an 05 as well or can I only swap ball joints?

You can replace the balljoints only if you need the larger dia ones for the '05. Or just use SVT spindles.

Thank you for the response. I would like to use the SVT but they are not very common in new England. However I can find 05 spindles easily and cheaply. I'm glad I can just swap ball joint, last thing if have to ask is if I don't feel like trying to cut off the old one can I get 05 control arms and bolt them on?

The ball joints on the Motorcraft OEM control arms are rivited into the arm. So replacement is easiest when you replace the whole arm.

Note that the ball joint (at least with MOOG) is not as good when it comes with the arm vs buying the higher end Problem Solver ball joint. But you battle with drilling out the rivets.

The 05 is an upgrade for the SVT as the caliper bolts directly to the snuckle through a bracket in the same place. Its been so long since I have had OEM base line brakes that I do not know if you will run into any problems with a base line 01 ZX3 with stock front brakes on the 05 knuckle. the ears on the SVT knuckles where the calipers bolt to are the only difference in the 02-04 SVT knuckles when compaared to the 00-04 baseline knuckles.

.

I don't mind the stock calipers not fitting only reason for the swap was for future brake upgrades. If the SVT calipers fit that's even better. I'll run drilled and slotted rotors with hawk pads on svt front caliper and I'm using massive speeds for rear drum to disc conversion. I'm actually happy you said the SVT calipers fit on that because I can get those calipers decently cheap. Otherwise I was going to run the brembo gt series kit. As to the ball joint that's fine i can drill through and replace with problem solver I just don't like the three bolt systems because it reminds me of my old truck and the three bolt system they used sucked to keep tight. I just wanted all this info for the future. Right now it's a stock motor with boost. That being said I'm hoping running the rear brake as disc and drilled and slotted front and rear on stock zx3 front brakes will be good enough or should I just swap now?

you doing track use for this car, slotted and drilled is for looks but its your car.

Not sure I fully understand what you are wanting to run vs what you are running.

also the return key helps brake up large paragraphs to make it easer to read :-)

I have converted my 01 ZX3 which has SVT front brakes and knuckles to the 05 a few months back when I was wanting another set of assembled knuckles with bearings and hubs for track use. I was finding it hard and expensive to get SVT knuckles so made the swap.

I have the C-F-M tubular control arms also so the "upgrade" to the larger ball joint was buying new bolts from C-F-M.

I now have a spare set of SVT knuckles for my SVT car so that will stay SVT and I have two sets of '05 knuckles for my track car.

Just use red lock tight on the bolts when you torque them down and they should stay tight. I think they recomend using at minimum blue on them, I would use red. I have had control arms come from MOOG (which uses a few approved manufactures to actually build the Foci control arms) and had the ball joint bolted in. It came loose on its own so I had to apply my own lock tight and re torque.

In the future I would be considering some track/autocross/drag days. I just wanted a bit better braking when I go for more power. First setup is just OEM rebuild with all ARP bolts. Hoping for around 230whp. I just want something with a little better bite.

So would 05 spindles with SVT caliper, rotors, and pads be a good choice? If that is a decent set up I would just run that until I reach a point that it might not be good enough

When I get everything else set up looking into the focuspower fully built motor or building it myself and trying for as much as I can out of the stock fuel system. Would enjoy future proofing.

Thank you for the information on the ball joints, I would be just replacing the balljoint then since the control arms are brand new. Speaking of the control arms, How are the tubular? Any photos, install threads?

1. Where is the 230whp coming from?

2. 05 spindles with SVT caliper, rotors, and pads are good. All bolt on as long as you use 05 ball joint. (or complete control arm)

3. CFM arms are pretty nice. Search on here

I think a front and rear SVT brake set up is good. with a good pad and rotor with SS lines and good fluid I have not had any issues yet on my end. Just got done with a full track day. I was running HPS pads but will be going to the HP+ here as I need new pads.

A thing to think about is the Hubs, for street, auto-x, and drag racing its not an issue but if doing track days you will want to look at better machined hubs. I have had two of the cast hubs fail on me. I bought Super Hubs through a group buy and had no issue what so ever at my last event.

Only upgrade beyond SVT would be to the TCE or Wiliwood two piece rotor and your doing that not so much for the power to stop but to avoid putting heat into the bearing.

I think if you get HPS pads, SVT rotors, with SS lines you will be happy with the bite it provides. Only thing I am thinking of doing on my set up is to get come ducting routed. I have a fancy front bumper that I can make some custom scoops for.

Control arms are great. Easy to work on, lots of adjustment since I also have camber plates up top.
For install check out my Tick build thread in the bottom. Have to copy the link and paste it in to the browser. For some reason FF does not let you have hyperlinks in your signature. (i didi it for you http://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/s...ferrerid=62897 )

Thanks you for the info. The 230WHP will be coming from the turbo set up. Sorry I didn't mention that.
