The award-winning new Ford Focus, already one of Europe’s favorite cars, will debut in Puerto Rico and North America in the fall. Designed to represent the future for the automaker, the new Ford Focus is set to redefine customer expectations of small cars, with a comfortable and spacious interior, superior driving dynamics, excellent fuel economy and safety technology unprecedented in its price class.
The Ford Focus was introduced in the European market in 1998, where it immediately became a best selling car. The 2000 Ford Focus, winner of the 1999 "European Car of the Year" award, recorded one of the highest sales volumes in European automotive history. The "European Car of the Year" award is widely considered to be the most significant accolade in the European motor industry.
"There is great anticipation on the island for the new Ford Focus", said Richard Matheson, Ford Caribbean district manager. "We are already getting
frequent inquiries about when the Focus will be available in Puerto Rico, and it’s not surprising: this car is exceptionally well designed to lead the small car market into the new millennium".
Matheson added that the Escort will remain in Ford’s car lineup after the introduction of the new Ford Focus. "There is enough room for both the Ford Focus and the Escort. Keeping both cars will give customers a wider variety of choices in small cars", Matheson noted.
The Ford Focus will be available locally in two body styles, a four-door sedan and a versatile wagon, each with separate, distinct personalities designed to appeal to different niches in the broad small car market.
A streamlined development process and a customer-centered way of operating have allowed the Ford Focus to boast some attributes that make it stand out from the competition. For instance, the Ford Focus has the most spacious interior in its class, with room to seat five adults comfortably. There is more legroom in both front and rear seats and a high roofline to accommodate tall occupants. Tall and wide doors make getting in and out easier than ever.
An independent multi-link rear suspension provides an improved ride, stability and excellent handling. The Ford Focus has the stiffest body structure in its class, yet it is also one of the lightest, which makes the car a class leader in driving dynamics.
Safety has been a priority in the new Ford Focus. Its stiff body is engineered to achieve maximum crash-energy absorption. The Ford Focus comes with driver and passenger airbags, and optional head and chest side air bags. An advanced safety belt system, including pre-tensioners and load-limiting retractors, provides optimum protection in case of a collision. Advanced anti-lock brakes are also available. And the Ford Focus is one of the first small cars to offer ISOFIX child-safety attachments in the rear seat.
To avoid theft, the Ford Focus is equipped with SecuriLock, a passive anti-theft system exclusive to Ford.
The new Ford Focus provides exceptional fuel economy and meets low-emission vehicle (LEV) requirements.
