Valve Lash, Need a quick question answered

Just finished installing my crower cams on my new motor well sorta.. Everything checked out except for one for which I do not have a tappet or bucket to correct it with. It is at .264mm or roughly .0095" on the exhaust side. I know it calls for .010" to .0135" can I get away with that?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Wait for Tom's opinion IMHO or one equally valid.

Do you have the metric specs? Bet the inches are a translation from them.

If an .010" went through tight it'd prob. be good, but since I see it's a turbo build that might want looser - that's why I'm thinking wait for an answer.

I will wait.

I mean is it something I could get away with just sanding a bit off the top of the valve to get the clearance? Because the closest one I have brings me to .014" or a little over .33mm

Honestly for myself if it was that bloody close I might throw the cam in & measure. .010 makes it (likely) call it good.

Some recommend taking down the inside of the tappet (not easy) rather than the valve tip for adjustments. Tip for that little seems like almost nothing. Half a thou is awful close to official.

Just not the experienced expert with that engine myself, so less of a "feel" for it.

You might could get away with it , I would give it a try and install and measure it and like you said , cut the tip of the valve it it needs a little more clearance

I have a drag on the cam at .0095

Probably going to leave it alone then. I am sure it will wear a little bit after a couple thousand miles anyway.

With a .009 shim it slides in, with .0095 it is tight. .010" won't go in.

If you got a 10 or 14 choice go with the 14, you can't burn a valve like that. Turbo tends to heat motor more meaning you worry about tight more than loose. The same turbo will make the 14 better as it makes the 10 worse. And the 14 is 50% closer to the range, you are talking tight by 1 and loose by 1/2. I could tell you of a personal thing where going closer just like that burned valves in a motor. A measly thousandth there killed me on several valves in 5K miles.

Change the tappet later again if needed past the wear-in which can get either tighter or looser. A race between valve seat or tip wearing faster at new startup, ALL the parts have to settle in.

Yes you can sand the valve tip and up inside tappet as well but more work than you think and the mess in motor? Death. But if you are not really together yet then go for that.

Your stuff and do as you will.
