Well generalized it may be you made the comment in my thread where I'm pretty sure I mentioned that I was in college early on.



Now that I've decided that I'm getting a tune and cam gears.

. How do I choose cam gears?

I went by weight and reputation.
The old CFM gears were the lightest made and from a company I trust (who supports us) so that's what I went with.
Previously I had Focus Central gears.

I also felt that a 5 bolt design had superior anti-slip vs a 3 bolt design.



Personally, I think CFM has one of the better designs. Kent would be second on my list.
Ebay brands I would just avoid completely.

it says for 5 bolt pattern only, im assuming mine does? i guess ill go out and check anyways

oh i keep seing these arp bolts, do i need those?

Dont need them however is nice to get away from the large Torque style of bolt because some people have had issues with them stripping and then its a pain to get out. if you feel confident that you have the right tools likely no need but if you plan on having them on and off several times during the life of the motor they are likely worth the investment.

Them's the ones.

I'm just using some off the shelf bolts on mine, M12 I think they are ... bring a stocker with and just match it up. Hardened washers behind the bolt (didn't want to mar the gears too much).
I HATE the stock Torx crap. I think I'm up to 6 broken and 4 twisted to shit bits on just them now. Enoughs enough. Hex or 12 point is just much easier to work with, and saves tools/skin/blood.
Up to you how deep you want to go though.

If I was going to do them again, I might try studs/Nyloc nuts. Just for something different.

You don't get any bolts with the cam gears. But you're fine with reusing the stock ones ... just make sure you torque them good.

I bought the cheapest known brand I could which was MAC lol they work fine. Obviously don't over tighten the bolts. As for the bolt just get rid of it and save the headache, though I still use mine. Just make sure you are applying enough pressure to keep the bit seated in the torx bolt when trying to torque them or remove them and you shouldn't have any problems. They aren't going to hold the bit like a bolt would a socket and that lets them slip out and strip the bolt or the bit. It's just a horrible design if you ask me.

I wouldnt do just cam gears , you wont get much if any gain and there will be 2 cost , the cost of the gears then dyno tuning the gears , just isnt worth it

Get gears and wait to install till you get the cams , work on getting the SVT header that will net you 9-11 HP to the wheels

Yeah, I was so far off trying to use my butt dyno. When I got them dyno tuned they actually went the other direction compared to where I was adjusting them and it made more hp and tq everywhere after that. So just wait to do it til your ready. Typically the factory timing isn't bad but it can be off some and this is why some Zetecs were stronger than others. But you won't know til you get to the dyno so it's just best to wait til then to mess with any of it.
