Just bought a ZETEC crate motor for $500!!!

SO, I just bought a ZETEC crate motor of craigslist. It is a straight from ford, zero miles, never even started (other than any ford testing), crate engine, and i got it for $500!!!!!

The guy bought it from ford to use on a dune buggy, and had this big adapter plate to use a VW trans, and a stand alone engine managment setup. he was originally selling it for $1100, then $950, then $850, and so on, and so on till it got to $550, and i was able to snag it for $500.

I am going to do the swap after I get a new car for the Fiance, and was wondering if there are any simple things that i should do while it is out. Things like ARP rod bolts for example.

I was also wondering what needs to be done, and/or bought if i decide to go with some slightly beefier cams, and how well a stock bottom end holds up.

I could hate you lol

Good find.

Unless you are going for big boost, you don't need to tear it apart.

The regular Zetec is good up to 240HP on stock internals.

No boost plans. I just remember seeing some posts about the zetec having weak rod bolts. I have beat the piss out of mine for the past 50k, and had no trouble, so I figure it was probably ok.

Don't plan on putting big money into the focus, I need to restore my 67 Mini Cooper before I do that.

Just bought a ZETEC crate motor for $500!!!

Anybody got any input on what bolt on mods I should get, and the kind of performance increase I could look foreward to?

On my beat up, 180k engine I have now, I am running a SVT header, no Egr, no cat, and cold air intake. It's pretty peppy, but the new motor I want to be more peppy. I don't want to change anything in the long block essentially. Just the externals.

How effective are the SCT tuners with a good cal?

If you want it more peppy besides doing SVT header, pro, exhaust and intake. Then tune can help abit. Other than that you're talking cams w/adjustable gears and maybe some head work and a throttle body to take more advantage of the cams depending on how aggressive you got.

A tune and some cams will pep it up nicely, but it may still leave you wanting more which would mean head work. Honestly you'll probably notice a big difference with a tune with your mods. I know I gained a crap load of low end grunt when I got my tune, not to mention it runs so much better.

I know this is a late reply, but finally got the motor in and it runs great.

As far as head work goes, I need to find myself a ruined zetec head I can chop up to see the port wall thickness. My dad and I do a lot of porting by hand on a number of different motors.
