Another DIY cone filter install

Spend $25 and slapped it on. For sure can hear a difference in sound, slight more performance at higher rpm. First tank of gas the car often ran like crap at low speed/rpm, eventually got about 25mpg :( Second tank of gas it ran slightly better getting around 27mpg. Is this normal? Does the ecm need time to adjust to the new air flow/MAF settings? I installed new plug wires afterwards and it also seems to be running much better so that might be a separate issue.

you can expect your fuel economy to stay the same the way you have it. Just slapping on a filter that is not designed or tested for the focus is not going to be ideal.

you can reset the ecu by unplugging your battery for about 15-20 min and reconnecting it, your fuel economy will return to "normal" for about 100 miles or so then go back down

It's always a good Idea to remove the negative terminal from the battery and let it sit about 30mins to let the ECU completely re-set. When you hook it back up, let it idle for about 5mins, it'll jerk around and sound funny abit but this is the ECU adjusting. Then drive normally for about 10mins after it smooth's out.

Also bad gas mileage may be a side affect from honing, them cone filters sound intoxicating between 2-3k rpm huh?

Just making sure: you did but a tiny filter on the breather or re-rought it into the intake right?

yep, love that sound once the rpm's get there, otherwise off the start no difference.

nope, never saw anything about filtering the breather

i decided to put new plug wires on which fixed my slight misfire feeling between 40-50mph. i then did a test.

full fill up mileage with cone filter: 245 miles (10gall)

full fill up with stock filter: 280 miles

i'm leaving that stupid cone filter off, it runs so much better with the stock setup.

It may be that you like the sound more so you are accelerating harder and rev higher due to the sound. can be partially subconscious.
